Paige and I chose to use Storybird for our collaborative digital storytelling project.  I really like this program, primarily because the artwork is so incredibly amazing and it is easy to work back and forth with a partner.  Once you’ve started a project, you can “invite” another person to start collaborating and it can go back and forth between partners quite easily.

We had decided to use one of Aesop’s Fables to retell digitally.  The main reason for this is because they are very simple easy stories. We chose the story of the Ant and the Grasshopper, but there wasn’t a lot of bug imagery to pull from, so we thought we could change up the animals without affecting the content of the story.  So, Paige chose “animals” for the search and we got literally a hundred or more “tiles” of images.  This method of retrieving images pulls from the subject. 

You can also pull via an artist.  This is beautiful and has a lot more continuity to the visualization of you story, but at the same time it can limit you.  I think it is a lot easier to create a new story in this manner than to make an existing story fit.

Because we were trying to adapt an already existing story, it was easier to just do a broad search rather than stick with one artist.

I have to say, I am quite excited about the digital storytelling format. As we were beginning process, one of the 8th grade teachers at the school was teaching about Fairy Tales. I saw how seamlessly this could fit into her lesson plans and the visualization could really help her students be more thoughtful with the formatting of a cohesive story. I have since spoken with 2 other teacher who work with the EC (Exceptional Children) and I told them about Storymaker. Their students are lower in skill level and I think Storymaker could really benefit them as well.
